DUNNING KRUGER EFFECT

DUNNING KRUGER EFFECT

The Dunning Kruger effect is when people with little knowledge tend to overestimate their ability and have a very high confidence. Without the self-awareness of their lack of knowledge they tend to overrate their knowledge. Many people at this stage lack self-awareness. They simply don’t know that they don’t know. "I think the problem with people like this is that they're so stupid that they have no idea how stupid they are" - John cleese

Then moving towards the path gaining more knowledge………

The more they learn, the more they recognize their lack of experience and thus their confidence levels becomes moderate.

This is a common phenomenon that happens in almost ever field. The people who have gathered a little knowledge in a small period of time tends to be very confident and vocal/public for their opinions. They tend to form strong opinions for various topics, whereas scientists, experts still feel that they are not perfect and are cautious about what they speak and use measured language. Stupid people are so sure of themselves and smart ones seem to second guess everything.

on the other hand, experts have understood from their experience that there are many aspects for every single issue which requires in depth knowledge and understanding. Everything is much more vast and complicated than it looks. There is no advice which fits everyone.

This phenomenon is dangerous and it’s important to recognize it before believing to what the other person is saying.

×     This phenomenon is dangerous because the voice heard out loud in the crowd is the voice of the ones with insufficient or superficial knowledge (in most of the cases). These people would be loud, too confident and convincing enough with their non-researched opinions.

×     To tap such people is simple- these people tend to provide a easy looking, simple solution which seems impressive, and hassle-free and which is common for all and and and is the wrong solution.

These people focus on shortcuts than on the actual path, moreover they are not even able to justify what all they say because they are not even themselves aware of the whole picture.

Listen to people who are humble enough to admit what they don’t know or what they said wrong.

×     No matter who we are and how much knowledge we have in our field, we all must sit back and evaluate. One must keep upgrading his/her knowledge time to time. Learn to respect someone’s expertise and admit what all we don’t know.
